Lykke Li drops this perfect cold weather tune for all the stalker-romantics out there.
The Tarik Saleh-directed video for “I Follow Rivers,” inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky‘s The Sacrifice, is shot on the magic island of Gotland, Närsholmen (for all you Ingmar Bergman stans in the building), according to her website.
[Saleh, who is Egyptian and Swedish, is known for 2009’s Metropia, that animated, sci-fi thriller with voices by Vincent Gallo and Juliette Lewis. And The Sacrifice was Russian director Tarkovsky’s last final he completed before he died in 1986.]
Check out the clip and you’ll see what I mean as Li chases her emotionally (and literally) distant boo, played by Swedish Lebanese actor Fares Fares, through woods and across snowy tundra.
Not one to bash the virtues of being loyal in love, but not at the expense of frostbit toes. I’m just sayin’.
However, text on her website offers this much more poetic description of the action:
A place like no other, a love like no other.
A love like a drug, she loves like the river, a love caught on fire, fueled by desire.
Where you running, who you running from?
A love story with no end and no beginning.”
Her persistence pays off in the end though. She consoles. He weeps, perhaps knowing he not only needs to make up for his predictably stubborn ways but now he owes her foot massages for the next few weeks to amend for causing her tootsies to freeze.
