Brooklyn‘s own Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire has been building his buzz all summer long. And the online big dawgs love him too, folks from The Awl to the Los Angeles Times acknowledging him as a definite one-to-watch. (The Times described him as “one of the borough’s best hopes of recent vintage” and his style as “no-frills bodega rap.”)
His Lost In Translation is a grimy 18-track mixtape full of arrogant/ig’nant, sex-obsessed rhymes that revel in cheap vodka-fueled hoodrat posturing. Brooklyn’s definitely in the house.
The non-remixed version is my favorite. I often catch myself singing its incredibly catchy (and I mean that in the best possible way) chorus under my breath: “Drunk-driving on a Wednesday/ With, three bitches in a MPV/ Half-a-gallon of Georgi Porgi/ And, cranberry that’s the p-o-p/ (the love passion) a recipe for terror/ We mix them shits together/ And then we have an orgy/ We in this life forever/ We never gonna stop/ You with us? Let me hear you scream/ Huzzah!”
Granted, getting drunk, driving drunk, and having orgies are not the most enlightened (or original) hip-hop pastimes. But who are we to quibble over how Mr. eXquire has a good time? He sounds as unhinged and in control as ODB and 50 Cent. He looks like a cross between Professor X and Biggie. He’s got retro-rap geeks geeked because Lost In Translation has the lyricism, humor, element of danger and East Coast production/jacked beats that recall the best of bygone eras. And he’s got a nom de plume that just rolls off the tongue. Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire’s got a lot going for him.
And “Huzzah” isn’t the only track that knocks. Other standouts on the mixtape include “Chicken Spot Rock” feat. Dallas the Kid (peep the sampled pieces of Cannibal Ox‘s “Vein”), “Build-A-Bitch” feat. El-P and “Weight of Water.” There are a few misses too (fast forward past “Lou Ferigno’s Mad” and “Lovesponge”). Still, we’re looking forward to hear more and more from Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire. (Just had to repeat his name again.)
