Danny Brown Radio Song

Times Tables: Danny Brown in "Radio Song"

It takes cojones to rap and rock a perm.

Only a few—Dru Down, Big Boi, Ice-T, Snoop Dogg—have done justice to that stylistic disconnect.

And Detroit‘s Danny Brown is right up there with them but for different reasons.

He’s not so much invoking a pimp aesthetic but rather an alt-black steez that embraces dudes who aren’t afraid to slip on skinny jeans or sport an asymmetrical bone-straight ‘do.

Danny Brown’s new video for “Radio Song” from last year’s crazy banger of a label debut, XXX, is one big F-U to the hip-hop conformists and the label execs who sign them.

(The XXX deluxe edition featuring a full digital lyric booklet and three brand new, unreleased tracks is available today on iTunes. Vinyl junkies can pick up XXX on sale 4/21 in a special Record Store Day 2xLP set on white vinyl with a limited bonus 7″ of “XXXapellas” only included in the RSD pressing.)

Originality is this dude’s main mantra.

(He might rhyme a lot about chicks and drugs but you can’t deny that his nasal tone and syncopated delivery is unlike almost anything in rap today.)

In the clip, he makes his point—grew some identity balls—over and over…literally. A nifty camera trick multiplies the Danny Brown effect so you get the point(s).

Pay attention.
